Cooley

County Louth, Ireland · 1987'den beri

Cooley Distillery was established in 1987 by entrepreneur John Teeling on the shores of Carlingford Lough in County Louth, Ireland, repurposing a former state-owned potato alcohol plant into what would become a landmark independent whiskey producer. At a time when Irish whiskey was dominated by just two major players, Cooley dared to chart its own course, introducing pot still and grain whiskey expressions that challenged conventions. The distillery gave life to celebrated labels such as Kilbeggan, The Tyrconnell, Connemara, and Greenore, each representing a distinct facet of Irish whiskey craft. Connemara, in particular, earned global recognition as a peated Irish single malt — a style long thought incompatible with the country's smooth, triple-distilled traditions. In 2012, Beam Inc. acquired Cooley, bringing the distillery into what is now Beam Suntory. Despite the change of ownership, Cooley's legacy endures as a defining chapter in the revival of Irish whiskey's rich and varied heritage.
