Nantou Distillery sits in the heart of Taiwan, nestled among the lush mountains of Nantou County at an elevation of roughly 550 metres. Established in 1978 under the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation (TTL), it originally focused on traditional Chinese spirits before pivoting to single malt whisky and earning its place as the island's most storied distillery. The subtropical climate plays a decisive role: the warm temperatures accelerate maturation dramatically, allowing the cask to impart rich, complex flavours in a fraction of the time required in cooler climates. Released under the Omar label, Nantou's single malts are celebrated for their vibrant tropical fruit notes, delicate floral aromas, and a gently spiced backbone. The distillery employs both bourbon and sherry cask finishes, and notably incorporates local Kaoliang wine barrels, lending an unmistakably Taiwanese character to its expressions. International recognition arrived swiftly — multiple gold medals at the World Whiskies Awards confirmed what Asian whisky enthusiasts had long suspected: Nantou is a world-class producer deserving of serious attention.
