Mars Shinshu
Nagano, Japan · 1985'den beri
Mars Shinshu Distillery sits at roughly 800 metres above sea level in the village of Miyada, deep within Japan's Southern Alps in Nagano Prefecture. Part of the Hombo Shuzo company — a producer with roots in wine and shochu stretching back to 1949 — the distillery first began whisky production in 1985, only to suspend operations in 1992 due to economic pressures during Japan's post-bubble slump. Its reopening in 2011 coincided with, and to some extent catalysed, renewed international interest in Japanese single malt whisky. The high altitude brings cold, moist mountain air that slows maturation gently, lending the spirits a refined, mineral-edged character with notes of orchard fruit and subtle floral complexity. The flagship 'Komagatake' releases — named after the nearby sacred mountain — have garnered critical acclaim across the globe and are often difficult to obtain given the distillery's intentionally modest output. Mars Shinshu represents a quieter, more contemplative side of Japanese whisky, one shaped as much by geography and patience as by craft.
