Yoichi is one of Japan's most storied whisky distilleries, established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru on the rugged, fog-shrouded coastline of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. Taketsuru, who had studied chemistry and distillation in Scotland, deliberately chose Yoichi for its climatic resemblance to the Scottish Highlands — cold winters, sea breezes, and dense forests that lend the whisky its distinctive character. The distillery is renowned for its use of coal-fired direct heating of pot stills, a practice now exceptionally rare worldwide, which imparts a bold, weighty profile to the spirit.
