Westland Distillery was founded in 2010 by Matt Hofmann and Emerson Lamb in Seattle, Washington, making it one of the pioneering forces behind the American single malt whiskey movement. Drawing on the lush agricultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest, Westland distinguishes itself through the use of five distinct Washington-grown barley varieties, a practice almost unheard of in American whiskey production. While acknowledging debts to Scotch whisky tradition, the distillery emphatically stakes its claim as a product of its own terroir. Expressions range from approachable American Oak releases to the boldly experimental Garryana series, which employs barrels crafted from the rare Oregon white oak that grows only in the Pacific Northwest. The resulting whiskies offer layers of dark fruit, toasted hazelnut, baker's chocolate, and an earthy minerality that speaks to the rain-soaked forests of the region. Acquired by Rémy Cointreau in 2016, Westland has expanded its global reach without compromising the singular vision that defines its craft.
