Vega Sicilia stands as one of Spain's most storied and revered wine estates, founded in 1864 along the banks of the Duero River in the Ribera del Duero region of Castilla y León. At a time when Spanish fine wine barely registered on the world stage, the estate's founder Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves brought Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec cuttings from Bordeaux, blending them with the native Tinto Fino to create a wine of remarkable complexity. The flagship Único, often aged for a decade or more in a combination of oak barrels and bottles before release, remains one of the world's most patiently crafted wines. Its profile — layers of dark fruit, cedar, leather, tobacco, and finely integrated spice — rewards collectors willing to cellar it for decades. Alongside Único, the estate produces Valbuena 5°, released after five years of ageing, and the more approachable Alión from a separate winery. Gracing the tables of royalty and heads of state for generations, Vega Sicilia is the cornerstone upon which the modern reputation of Spanish fine wine was built.
