Togouchi
Hiroshima, Japan
Togouchi is a Japanese whisky brand produced by Chugoku Jozo, a distillery and sake producer based in Akiota, a small town nestled in the mountains of Hiroshima Prefecture. What sets Togouchi apart from many of its contemporaries is its remarkable maturation environment: an abandoned railway tunnel carved into the mountains, stretching approximately 150 metres in length. This tunnel maintains a consistently cool temperature and high humidity throughout the year, creating ideal natural conditions for whisky aging. Togouchi blends malt and grain whiskies imported from Scotland and Canada, maturing and marrying them within this unique underground cellar to develop a distinctive character. The resulting expressions tend to offer notes of sweet fruit, vanilla, honey, and gentle spice — approachable yet layered. Togouchi represents an intriguing chapter in the story of Japanese whisky, demonstrating how geography and unconventional thinking can shape a spirit's identity in ways that go far beyond the still room.
