Suntory Yamazaki
Yamazaki, Osaka, Japan · 1923'den beri
Yamazaki stands as Japan's oldest malt whisky distillery, founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii in the misty valley where the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers converge near Osaka. The choice of location was deliberate: the humidity and natural mists of the valley create ideal conditions for a slow, graceful maturation. Masataka Taketsuru, who had studied distillation in Scotland, brought technical expertise that merged with Torii's vision for a distinctly Japanese palate. The result was a whisky of uncommon elegance — layered with ripe orchard fruits, delicate spice, and a signature smoothness derived in part from aging in rare Japanese Mizunara oak, alongside Sherry and Bourbon casks. When Jim Murray awarded Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 the title of World's Best Whisky in 2015, it sent shockwaves through the whisky world and confirmed what connoisseurs had long suspected. Yamazaki is not merely a product of craft; it is a meditation on patience and the Japanese philosophy of monozukuri — the art of making things with utmost care.
