Scapa
Orkney, Scotland · 1885'den beri
Scapa Distillery sits on the southern shore of Orkney's Mainland, overlooking the historic waters of Scapa Flow, where the German fleet was scuttled in 1919. Founded in 1885, the distillery has led a quietly eventful life — shutting during wartime, reviving, passing through different owners, and eventually finding stability under Chivas Brothers. What distinguishes Scapa from its famous Orcadian neighbour, Highland Park, is its near-complete avoidance of peated malt, which allows the spirit's maritime character to speak without smoky interference. The use of a Lomond wash still — a rare configuration in Scottish whisky — contributes to the distillery's singular house style: a medium-bodied dram with notes of caramel, orchard fruit, toffee, and a gentle briny salinity that recalls the surrounding sea. Expressions such as Scapa Skiren and the age-stated Scapa Glansa mature exclusively in first-fill American oak, reinforcing the spirit's sweet, coastal personality. Scapa remains one of the less-celebrated gems of the north, offering an unhurried, quietly complex whisky for those willing to look beyond the island's more prominent name.
