Sassicaia is a legendary red wine born on the sun-drenched coastal hills of Bolgheri in Tuscany, a wine that fundamentally redefined what Italian viticulture could achieve. The story begins with Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who in the 1940s planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines on his Tenuta San Guido estate, inspired by the great châteaux of Bordeaux. For decades, the wine was enjoyed privately by the family and close friends before its first commercial vintage in 1968 introduced it to the wider world. In 1978, it was awarded the title of Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator, cementing its place among the world's finest wines. Sassicaia achieved an extraordinary legal distinction in 1994 when it was granted its own dedicated DOC appellation — Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC — making it the only single estate in Italy to hold such a designation. The wine itself is a study in elegance: dark fruit, cedar, graphite, and tobacco leaf woven into a structure of fine tannins and extraordinary longevity. It stands as both the pioneer and the pinnacle of the Super Tuscan movement, a testament to visionary winemaking against the grain of convention.
