Saburomaru
Toyama, Japan · 1862'den beri
Saburomaru Distillery, established in 1862 in Toyama Prefecture on Japan's western Honshu coast, stands as one of the oldest and most distinctive whisky producers in the country. Rooted in a centuries-old sake-brewing tradition, the distillery carries that careful, measured craft into its malt whisky production. What sets Saburomaru apart in the wider world of Japanese whisky is ZEMON, the only traditional cast-iron pot still in Japan. Unlike copper pot stills, this unique vessel lends the spirit a heavier, more resinous and earthy character — oily, complex, and deeply textured. The Hokuriku region's climate, shaped by the nearby Japanese Alps and the country's heaviest snowfall, creates exceptional conditions for cask maturation. The mineral-rich mountain water sourced locally adds another layer of distinctiveness to the distillate. For much of its history, Saburomaru remained a quiet, local concern, largely unknown beyond Toyama. The craft whisky renaissance of the 21st century brought renewed attention and international recognition, revealing a whisky style that is unmistakably Japanese yet unlike any other in the archipelago.
