Royal Lochnagar stands at the foot of the mountain that shares its name, nestled beside the River Dee in the Scottish Highlands, just a short walk from the gates of Balmoral Castle. Founded in 1845 by John Begg, the distillery rose to royal prominence almost immediately when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert paid a visit shortly after its establishment. That royal patronage elevated the distillery to the status of supplier to the Royal Household and earned it the distinguished 'Royal' prefix — a title rarely bestowed upon a whisky producer. The distillery is deliberately small in scale, allowing for meticulous attention to each distillation. Its single malt character leans toward ripe orchard fruits, gentle spice, a warm sweetness, and a subtle oakiness derived from careful maturation. As part of Diageo's Classic Malts selection, Royal Lochnagar occupies a quietly authoritative position in the Highland canon. It is a whisky that rewards patience and reflection — much like the rugged, heather-covered landscape from which it springs.
