Pittyvaich

Speyside, Scotland · 1975'den beri

Pittyvaich is a closed Speyside distillery that operated for a brief but consequential period in the landscape of Scottish malt whisky. Founded in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons in Dufftown — a town already synonymous with distilling heritage — it was constructed primarily to supply bulk malt spirit for the Bell's blended Scotch whisky range. After Bell's was acquired by Guinness, and eventually under the stewardship of Diageo, the distillery was mothballed and then permanently closed in 1993, after less than two decades of production. This fleeting existence has lent Pittyvaich an almost mythological status among collectors. Bottlings that do emerge — most notably through Diageo's annual Special Releases program — reveal a spirit of surprising complexity: floral and fruity at times, with an occasionally earthy, robust undertone that belies its relatively modern origins. As stocks dwindle with each passing year, each bottle of Pittyvaich becomes a more poignant artifact — a liquid record of a distillery that never had the chance to fully reveal its potential.
