Penfolds Bin 389

South Australia, Australia · 1960'den beri

Penfolds Bin 389 has carried the nickname 'Poor Man's Grange' since its debut in 1960, and while the moniker is affectionate, the wine itself is anything but modest. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz sourced from select vineyards across South Australia, Bin 389 is matured in the very barrels that previously held Grange — a winemaking decision that imparts remarkable depth and a quiet sense of lineage. The result is a wine of considerable structure: dark plum, blackcurrant, chocolate, and cedar weave together across a palate underpinned by firm but supple tannins. It rewards patience, evolving gracefully over a decade or more in the cellar. Penfolds itself was founded in 1844 by English surgeon Christopher Rawson Penfold, and has since grown into one of the most recognized names in the wine world. Bin 389 stands as proof that greatness need not always come at the highest price — it is a wine that speaks of craft, continuity, and the enduring character of Australian viticulture.
