Nikka Taketsuru

Hokkaido / Miyagi, Japan · 1934'den beri

Nikka Taketsuru is a pure malt whisky series named in honour of Masataka Taketsuru, widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. In 1918, Taketsuru travelled to Scotland to study distilling firsthand, returning to Japan with both technical knowledge and an unwavering dedication to craft. He founded the Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido in 1934, drawn by the region's cool climate and rugged landscape, reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Later, in 1969, he established the Miyagikyo Distillery in Miyagi Prefecture, creating a second and distinctly contrasting style. The Taketsuru series blends malt whiskies from both distilleries, resulting in expressions that balance richness and elegance. Typical notes include dried fruit, dark chocolate, gentle peat smoke, and warming oak spice. Aged expressions such as the 17 Year Old and 21 Year Old have earned considerable acclaim on the international stage, helping to bring global recognition to Japanese whisky as a serious, world-class category.
