Mortlach holds the distinction of being one of the first legally licensed distilleries in Scotland, established in 1823 in Dufftown, the self-proclaimed whisky capital of Speyside. Nicknamed 'The Beast of Dufftown,' it has long been celebrated for a character that stands apart from its more delicate Speyside neighbors — rich, meaty, and profoundly complex. The secret lies in its unique 2.81 times distillation process, a labyrinthine journey through six stills of varying sizes that imparts a singular sulphurous depth and robust texture rarely encountered elsewhere. For much of its existence, Mortlach's spirit was quietly working behind the scenes as a foundational malt in Diageo's blended Scotch portfolio. It was only in 2014 that the distillery was officially unveiled as a single malt range in its own right, earning long-overdue recognition. Flavors of dark dried fruits, oak spice, game, and rich beef broth converge in a dram that rewards patience and contemplation above all.
