Miyagikyo

Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan · 1969'den beri

Miyagikyo Distillery was established in 1969 by Nikka Whisky founder Masataka Taketsuru, nestled in the verdant Miyagi Prefecture of Japan's Tohoku region, where the Hirose and Nikkawa rivers converge. Taketsuru, drawing on his formative years studying distillation in Scotland, sought a location whose climate and water mirrored the gentler Lowland spirit he admired. The result is a whisky that stands in deliberate contrast to Nikka's Yoichi expression — floral, fruity, and silkily approachable, with notes of apple blossom, ripe stone fruit, and delicate chocolate. Miyagikyo operates both pot stills and Coffey stills on-site, making it one of the few distilleries in Japan capable of producing both malt and grain whisky under a single roof. This breadth of production underpins Nikka's celebrated blending heritage. Across its range — from the core single malt to aged expressions — Miyagikyo consistently reflects the lush, misty landscape from which it draws its character.
