Lochnagar
Royal Deeside, Highlands, Scotland · 1845'den beri
Royal Lochnagar is one of Scotland's smallest and most historically distinguished distilleries, nestled in Royal Deeside just a short walk from Balmoral Castle. Founded in 1845 by John Begg, the distillery achieved remarkable recognition early in its life when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who had recently taken residence at Balmoral, accepted an invitation to tour the premises in 1848. Following that royal visit, Begg was granted a Royal Warrant, and the distillery proudly adopted the 'Royal' prefix — a distinction it has carried ever since. The small stills used at Royal Lochnagar contribute to a spirit of notable richness and concentration, often exhibiting dried fruit, warm spice, and a honeyed sweetness characteristic of well-matured Highland malts. Its Selected Reserve expression, a vatted malt finished in sherry casks, remains one of the most coveted limited releases associated with the site. Now part of the Diageo portfolio, Royal Lochnagar maintains a deliberately modest production scale, preserving the artisanal quality and historical prestige that have defined it for nearly two centuries. It is a distillery where heritage and liquid character are equally compelling.
