The name derives from the Gaelic for 'hollow by the mill,' a fitting description for a site steeped in centuries of illicit and then legitimate distilling history. What defines Lagavulin above all else is its commanding character: waves of peat smoke intertwined with briny sea air, dried fruit sweetness, dark chocolate, and a finish of extraordinary length and warmth. Its 16-year-old expression remains a benchmark of Islay whisky, widely regarded as one of the great single malts in the world.
