Kanosuke Distillery opened its doors in 2017 on the sun-drenched coastline of Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu, Japan. It stands as the whisky ambition of Komasa Jyozo, a family-owned producer with a century-old heritage in shochu craftsmanship. Drawing on generations of distilling wisdom rooted in sweet potato and rice shochu, the family turned its gaze toward single malt whisky, establishing a facility that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in local tradition. The distillery's proximity to the sea plays a meaningful role in maturation: the warm, humid climate and salt-tinged breezes interact with the oak casks to produce a spirit of notable mineral character. A diverse set of pot stills — varying in size and shape — allows the distillers to explore a wide spectrum of new make spirit styles, offering remarkable flexibility in blending and expression. Kanosuke single malts are often celebrated for their tropical fruit notes, gentle floral aromas, and a subtle coastal salinity that reflects the distillery's environment. As one of the newer voices in Japanese whisky, Kanosuke brings a distinctly southern Japanese warmth to the global stage.
