J&B Rare is one of Scotland's most recognizable blended Scotch whiskies, tracing its origins to 1749 when Giacomo Justerini, an Italian distiller and entrepreneur, moved from Bologna to London in pursuit of a soprano and a dream. He established what would eventually become Justerini & Brooks, a wine and spirits merchant that earned the patronage of the British royal household over several generations. The 'Rare' expression is a blend of 42 malt and grain whiskies, with a strong representation from Speyside distilleries such as Knockando and Auchroisk, which lend the blend its characteristic lightness, floral notes, and clean, approachable finish. With subtle hints of vanilla, dried fruit, and gentle oak spice, J&B Rare became a natural companion for mixed drinks long before cocktail culture reached its current prominence. During the mid-to-late 20th century, it ranked among the best-selling Scotch whiskies globally, particularly dominating markets in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, where it became deeply embedded in nightlife culture. Today, under Diageo's stewardship, J&B Rare continues to offer an honest, unpretentious gateway into the world of Scotch whisky.
