Isle of Arran Distillers was established in 1995 on the Isle of Arran, a scenic island off Scotland's west coast that had gone without legal distilling for over 160 years. Founded under the direction of Harold Currie in the village of Lochranza, the distillery set out to revive a tradition that had long been dormant on the island. In a relatively short span of time, Arran single malts earned a reputation for their accessible yet expressive character — typically showcasing tropical fruits, vanilla, honey, and gentle spice. The distillery remains committed to traditional wooden washbacks and carefully selected casks, offering a wide range of expressions finished in sherry, port, Amarone, and other wood types. In 2019, a second distillery named Lagg opened on the southern tip of the island, focusing on heavily peated expressions and adding a compelling contrast to the original house style. Isle of Arran stands as a fine example of how a young Scottish distillery can quickly carve out a distinctive identity and earn the admiration of whisky lovers worldwide.
