Cohiba stands as the undisputed crown jewel of the cigar world. Created in 1966 by Eduardo Ribera, Fidel Castro's personal cigar roller, it was initially reserved exclusively for state guests and diplomatic gifts before becoming commercially available in 1982. The name derives from the Taíno word for tobacco leaf, a nod to the island's deep indigenous heritage. All production takes place at the El Laguito factory in Havana, using leaves sourced from the most prized vegas of the Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Río. What distinguishes Cohiba from virtually every other Cuban brand is an additional third fermentation applied to the ligero and seco filler leaves, a meticulous process that strips away roughness and cultivates the brand's signature creaminess, earthiness, and refined complexity.
