Covering barely 11.4 hectares, Pétrus produces a wine composed almost entirely of Merlot — a rarity among the great Bordeaux reds dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. The secret lies beneath the vines: a unique plateau of blue clay interlaced with iron-rich 'crasse de fer' subsoil grants the grapes an unmatched depth and concentration.
