Château Mouton Rothschild
Pauillac, Bordeaux, France · 1853'den beri
Château Mouton Rothschild stands as one of the most celebrated estates in the world of wine, situated in the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's famed Left Bank. The estate was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, but it was Baron Philippe de Rothschild who truly shaped its modern identity from 1922 onward. Philippe introduced château bottling — a revolutionary step at the time — and relentlessly campaigned for the estate's elevation within the 1855 Médoc classification. That effort culminated in 1973, when Mouton became the only property ever to be promoted to Premier Cru Classé status, a singular moment in wine history. The wines, built predominantly on Cabernet Sauvignon, are known for their complexity, longevity, and a distinctive aromatic profile of blackcurrant, cedarwood, tobacco, and pencil shavings. Perhaps equally famous are its artist labels: each vintage since 1945 has featured original artwork commissioned from some of the world's greatest artists, including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Marc Chagall. Mouton Rothschild is as much a cultural institution as it is a wine estate.
