Château Margaux
Margaux, Médoc, Bordeaux, France · 1590'den beri
Château Margaux stands as one of the most iconic estates in the world of fine wine, situated in the Margaux appellation of the Médoc peninsula in Bordeaux. Its history stretches back to the late 16th century, but it was the landmark 1855 Classification that cemented its reputation as a Premier Grand Cru Classé — one of only five first growths in Bordeaux. The estate changed hands numerous times over the centuries before André Mentzelopoulos acquired it in 1977, ushering in a transformative era of investment and refinement. The vineyards, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with complementary plantings of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, rest on deep gravel soils that drain effortlessly and warm beautifully under the Gironde sun. The grand vin is celebrated for its extraordinary elegance: silky tannins, layered aromas of violet, blackcurrant, and rose petal, and a finish that lingers with uncommon persistence. Its second wine, Pavillon Rouge, and the estate's white, Pavillon Blanc — crafted entirely from Sauvignon Blanc — offer further dimensions of Margaux's terroir. The estate balances reverence for tradition with a thoughtful approach to sustainable viticulture.
