Bunnahabhain

Islay, Scotland · 1881'den beri

Bunnahabhain (pronounced 'Boona-ha-venn') stands on the northeastern shore of Islay, tucked into a remote, wind-swept bay that can only be reached by a single-track road — or, as was historically the case, by sea. Founded in 1881, the distillery was once a self-contained community, complete with its own housing for workers and their families. What sets Bunnahabhain apart from its Islay neighbours is its notably approachable character: while the island is synonymous with heavily peated, smoke-driven whiskies, Bunnahabhain traditionally produces expressions that are unpeated, rich, and coastal in nature. Notes of toasted nuts, dried fruit, sea salt, and gentle sweetness define the house style. The spirit carries a warmth and softness that can surprise those expecting the typical Islay punch. In recent years, however, the distillery has also embraced its island heritage by releasing heavily peated limited expressions alongside its classic range, offering something for every palate. Its Gaelic name translates to 'mouth of the river,' a fitting description for its setting beside the Sound of Islay. Bunnahabhain remains one of Islay's most quietly respected gems.
