Bulleit Bourbon traces its roots to a legend: Augustus Bulleit, a tavern owner in Louisville, reportedly developed a high-rye bourbon recipe in the 1830s before mysteriously disappearing in the 1860s. His descendant Tom Bulleit revived the recipe in 1987, relaunching the brand and eventually bringing it into the Diageo portfolio. The whiskey's defining characteristic is its unusually high rye content — roughly 28% — which gives it a bold, spicy, and dry profile that sets it apart from sweeter, corn-heavy bourbons. Notes of oak, vanilla, maple, and warming spice define the palate, while the finish lingers with a pleasant dryness. Distilled at Four Roses Distillery and aged at Stitzel-Weller warehouses in Shively, Kentucky, Bulleit has become a staple behind bars worldwide, prized by bartenders for its versatility in classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. The frontier-style flask bottle is as recognizable as the whiskey inside.
