Balmenach is one of Speyside's more venerable and lesser-known distilleries, nestled at the foot of the Cromdale Hills in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Licensed in 1824 by James McGregor, the distillery is said to have roots in illicit distilling that predate its official recognition by decades. Unlike many of its Speyside neighbours known for light, floral and fruity profiles, Balmenach produces a spirit of considerable weight and complexity — rich with earthy depth, ripe orchard fruits and a subtle smoky undercurrent that recalls an older, more rugged era of Scotch whisky. For much of its history, its output flowed quietly into the blending vats of major whisky houses, making single malt bottlings a rare and sought-after find. Now operating under Inver House Distillers, Balmenach remains a rewarding discovery for those who look beyond the celebrated names of the region.
