The Arran Distillery was established in 1995 on the Isle of Arran, a rugged yet picturesque island off the southwest coast of Scotland. The island had gone without legal distillation for over 160 years, making the reopening of a distillery in the village of Lochranza a celebrated moment in Scottish whisky history. Drawing on the island's pure spring water and clean Atlantic air, Arran produces single malts that are widely appreciated for their approachable, fruit-forward character. Notes of pear, peach, citrus, and vanilla define the house style, with greater complexity emerging as expressions are matured in ex-bourbon and sherry casks. The distillery's cask finish range — including Amarone, Sauternes, and Port Wood finishes — demonstrates a willingness to experiment while remaining grounded in quality. In 2019, a second distillery, Lagg, was opened on the southern shore of the island, focusing on a more heavily peated style that broadens the brand's expressive range. Remaining independent and family-spirited, Arran stands apart from the industry's larger players as a producer that prioritizes character and craft above scale.
