Amrut Fusion is a landmark single malt from Amrut Distilleries, founded in 1948 and based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The expression takes its evocative name from its blending philosophy: approximately sixty percent unpeated Indian barley is married with forty percent peated barley sourced from Scotland, creating a genuinely intercontinental whisky. The high-altitude, tropical climate of Bangalore accelerates maturation significantly, with angels' share reaching around twelve percent annually — a stark contrast to the gentle losses typical of Scottish warehouses. This rapid interaction with the cask results in a spirit of remarkable depth and complexity for its relatively young age. On the nose and palate, Fusion delivers a compelling array of tropical fruits — mango, pineapple, and guava — underscored by vanilla, a gentle sweetness from the oak, warm baking spices, and a subtle wisp of peat smoke on the finish. When Jim Murray awarded it third best whisky in the world in his 2010 Whisky Bible, it sent shockwaves through the established Scotch-centric whisky world, firmly placing India on the global distilling map. It remains a benchmark for New World whisky.
