Amrut

Bangalore, Karnataka, India · 1948'den beri

Amrut is the pioneering single malt whisky from India, produced by Amrut Distilleries, founded in Bangalore in 1948. The name derives from the Sanskrit word for 'nectar of immortality,' a fitting title for a spirit that has reshaped the world's perception of Indian whisky. Situated at approximately 920 metres above sea level, Bangalore's warm and humid climate accelerates maturation dramatically — the angel's share runs between 10 and 12 percent annually, far exceeding the Scottish average. This means the spirit achieves profound complexity in a fraction of the time required in cooler climates. Amrut uses six-row barley grown in the foothills of the Himalayas and pure Himalayan water, lending the whisky a distinctly earthy and tropical character. The brand's international breakthrough came in 2010 when Jim Murray ranked Amrut Fusion third in his Whisky Bible, a moment that challenged long-held prejudices against non-Scotch single malts. Expressions such as Fusion, Intermediate Sherry Matured and Kadhambam demonstrate the distillery's commitment to experimentation and craftsmanship in equal measure.
